RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
