The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
