The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.
