A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
