The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
