• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
